Essential Winter Tips to keep your home and family safe from Winter Fires

The leaves are falling, daylight savings has ended and it’s time to get your winter coat, electric blanket and heater from out of the cupboard. But just like summer, winter brings its own unique set of fire dangers.Essential Winter Tips

Indeed, according to statistics, almost half (43 per cent) of all fire fatalities occur in winter. But just like in summer, there are some things you can do to help keep you and your family safe.

Fireplaces and chimneys

  • Clean chimneys and flues before your first fire of the season.
  • Always use a fireguard or spark-guard with open fires.
  • Never throw rubbish into the fireplace, particularly batteries and aerosol cans.
  • Be mindful that ashes can take up to five days to cool so always empty your fireplace or wood burner ashes and ashtrays into a metal bin and pour water over them before throwing them out
  • Before going to bed, make sure your fireplace fire is out.

Electric blankets

  • Worn and old electric blankets can cause an electric shock, fire and possibly even death. At the first sign of wear have your electric blanket checked by a qualified electrician.
  • It’s best practice to replace your electric blanket every five years with newer heat-protected models. These are not only more energy efficient but are much safer.
  • Don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on.
  • Twisted cords are a common cause of electric blanket fires.
  • Make sure the blanket is always flat on the bed and that controls or cords are not twisted or caught between the mattress and the base of the bed.
  • When you store blanket away in the warmer months, make sure you roll it up and don’t fold it. Folding it can damage the wiring.

The kitchen

According to the NSW Fire and Rescue service, kitchen fires are the number one cause of household fires during winter. So when you’re trying to be the next Masterchef, keep these fire safety rules in mind.

  • Never ever leave cooking unattended – stick to the mantra “Keep Looking When Cooking”.
  • Heat cooking oil carefully and slowly in the right size saucepan to avoid fat splatters.
  • Turn pot and pan handles inwards so they can’t be knocked over.
  • Clean your stove grill after each use and clean the range hood filter and all kitchen appliances regularly.
  • Install a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen and know how to use them. They should be stored at least one metre away from the stove and between the stove and the nearest exit.
  • Install non-slip matting around the stove and sink area. If cooking oil catches fire, turn off the hotplate and slide the lid over the pan or use the fire blanket to smother the fire.
  • Ensure that all cooking appliances are turned off after use.

Heaters and clothes dryers

  • Don't keep your tea towels, oven mitts and other flammable items near the stove or cook-top.
  • Don't use water to put out fat and oil fires. Water can cause the fire to spread rapidly and cause horrific burns.
  • Remember the heater-metre rule – always keep furniture, curtains, clothes and children at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.
  • Don’t store objects on top of your heating appliance.
  • Never cover heating appliances.
  • Don’t overload clothes dryers and clean the lint filter after each load cycle.

Portable outdoor gas heaters

When using gas heaters please take a few moments to consider the following safety precautions – they may save a life.

  • Only use in well ventilated outdoor areas and on stable, level ground.
  • Keep clear from overhead coverings such as awnings, shade sails and other combustible materials which can by ignited by radiant heat. The manufacturer's instructions will show the necessary clearances from combustible materials.
  • Check to see that the hose is in good condition and doesn’t show any signs of damage or wear.
  • If the heater does not light straight away, turn it off and then try again. Don’t let the gas build up before trying to relight it.
  • Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance. Outdoor gas heaters do require safety checks and regular servicing (every two years). Gas cylinders and hose fittings must be checked for faults and damage regularly.

Most importantly, have an adequate number of suitable smoke alarms installed throughout your home and make sure that you test them regularly.

Report tabled by the Cosmetic and Beauty Therapy IPL/Laser Working Group

Please see a Status update from ARPANSA released last month.

"The Radiation Health Committee considered a report tabled by the Cosmetic and Beauty Therapy IPL/Laser Working Group in November 2016. The IPL Working Group concluded that there was insufficient information to substantiate the cost versus benefit estimations that would be required for a Decision RIS to be developed and therefore the Committee agreed not to proceed with a Decision RIS.

The Committee agreed that there is an opportunity to develop a national uniform approach to key issues raised by the consultation process. The development of a guide would provide a common framework for terminology, education, training, equipment, patient care and injury reporting that would be available to all states and territories.

The Committee agreed that the guide would be developed as a matter of priority and ARPANSA will promote it within the industry throughout Australia"

So national licensing requirements have been tabled, good news for some.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and Welcome to the APAA to all the AABTH members

HAPPY NEW YEAR ! Welcome to the APAA -the oldest and longest serving Beauty Therapy Association in Australia.

As you may have realised the AABTH is no longer in existence and has forwarded your memberships to the APAA. The AABTH formally closed its doors approx. 6 months ago and therefore you no longer are a member with the now extinct Beauty Association. The AABth had personally advised me that all the members were notified of their closure however it seems most of you have not received this notification.

However we are delighted to welcome you into the APAA- the ONLY Association in Australia that is essentially a not for profit organisation that is in existence only through and because of its members!

Please note we are NOT the NETWORK called APAN so if you have been approached by them please advise us. There is a HUGE difference between a NETWORK ( financially profitable for its Directors) and the APAA ( not for profit association)

Please call the APAA Office on 07-5575 9374 or 0403 846 622 or email me :

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to pay for your yearly membership which is now due for the Calender year 2016. You can pay with your credit card for your continued membership with the APAA or you can pay via DIRECT TRANSFER to:

ex AABTH members

Dear ex AABTH members

A very special welcome to you from the APAA National Board of Directors to the APAA and for the continuation of your Association Membership in the industry.

I have had a number of you advise me that you were not informed that the AABth was to close and I apologise for that issue but the APAA had no say in the closure of the AABth and in fact we were supportive of that industry Association in a number of ways. Because of the good relationship we have had with the now extinct AABTH we were  the obvious choice of the AABTH to take on the responsibility of providing industry support to the BEauty Industry in Australia. We are the oldest and longest serving industry Association in Australia and supportive of the Aesthetics industry. We are NOT a network and therefore please be aware when rejoining your membership to the APAA. Unfortunately there are those that are unscrupulous in the industry who will pretend to represent us and not provide what an Association can for its members.

As an APAA member not only do you have an Association  infrastrusture in place that supports you and your business 24/7 six days a week, but you also are entitled to over $3000 of benefits for your business as welll as receiving a yearly NEW Membership certificate, a Membership card plus a copy of the Association's Code of Ethics, a copy of the Mission Statement, a copy of How to USe our Logo for Advertisement purposes and a membership into our Continuin Education Points Program.

The APAA is the ONLY Association in Australia that has THREE TRADEMARKS that wills ervice your business practices by portraying Professionalism in the business. THese include:

1. AMCLP™ - Australian Medical and Clinical Laser Professionals

2. ACTP™   - Australasion Cosmetic Tattoo Professionals

3. ANP™     - Australasion Nail Professionals

As a member you can join these Trademarks under the umbrella of General membership to the APAA and enhance your business opportunities by promoting your added qualifications for the provision of these services to the industry.

The APAA is a National Association whose Head Office is based on the Gold Coast but our members reside all over Australia even in the outback remote areas including Kalgoorlie !!

You may call the APAA head Office on 07-5575 9364 or contact Anne-Marie directly on her mobile : 0403 846 622 or send any enquiries to : This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Once again we welcome you to the APAA- the industry leader and only Association for Aestheticians in Australia.

Kindest regards

ATO Notice to small Businesses

Good Morning Members

RE: ATO's firm hand on debt levels playing field for Small Business

The ATO Commissioner Chris Jordan spoke at the Council of Small Business Organisation's (COSBOA) National Small Business Summit in Sydney last month.

He spoke about the ATO being very clear that businesses not addressing their tax debts are gaining an unfair financial advantage over their competitors. They're also very clear about how they're addressing the issue.

ATO’s firm hand on debt levels playing field for small business

The ATO is very clear that businesses not addressing their tax debts are gaining an unfair financial advantage over their competitors.

They’re also very clear about how they’re addressing the issue.
Tax Commissioner, Chris Jordan, told the Council of Small Business Organisation’s National Small Business Summit, there’s help for those who are genuine about resolving difficulties.
But he said ATO statutory and legislative powers, including legal action, will focus on those who are not.
“If you are one of those people who are habitual late payers, you may be on the receiving end of SMS payment reminders.
“We’re also using analytics to identify taxpayers with a high risk of non-payment and, therefore, requiring more scrutiny and less tolerance when negotiating arrangements. “
The Commissioner said those who don’t respond to ATO approaches or who default on payment arrangements face:
• garnishee and director penalty notices for failing to pay employee super entitlements or remit amounts held in trust, and
• legal recovery action including bankruptcy or wind-up action where’s there’s evidence of taxpayer insolvency.
Self-managing debt is being promoted using tools like the Payment plan estimator on the ATO’s App for smart phones and tablet devices which shows how quickly a tax debt can be paid.
He said the latest App upgrade now also offers a Business performance check tool, so you can understand the financial health of your business
“It provides a snapshot of profitability, cash flow, working capital and debt serviceability.
“It also compares your business performance against similar businesses in your industry.”
The Commissioner drew attention to the range of assistance to self-manage debt which includes:
• a 24 hour automated phone service on 13 72 26 to arrange late payment or paying by instalments for debts less than $25,000
• interest-free payment arrangements for BAS debts for up to 12 months.
• the Payment Arrangement Calculator to work out a viable payment plan, and
• the Business viability assessment tool to assess your long term financial performance.
For more information, go to ato.gov.au/debt.

Managing your tax debt Everyone pays tax according to what they earn, so the government can provide the services we need. While most people do the right thing, some find it difficult to stay on track with their tax obligations. The simplest way for you to manage your tax is to pay in full and on tim…

Cosmetic Tattoo Notice to all members

Good Morning Members,

Please read the following letter if you are servicing Cosmetic Tattoo at your salon. Take heed of the warning in this letter refgarding the ink recalls.
Tattoo Ink Safety Warning
This letter is to provide advice to you about the recent voluntary recall of tattoo ink by
'A Thousand Virgins Corp. in Miami (City of Industry)'. A Thousand Virgins grey
wash inks; G1, G2 and G3, that are labelled with Lot No. 129, and bearing expiration
date: 1/16, (2oz and 4oz bottles) revealed contamination with Mycobacterium
chelonae, Microbacterium organisms, and the mould Cryptococcus albidus and
members of the Penicillium genus. Use of these products may cause bacterial
infection and can lead to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication of an
infection.
Whilst there is no product recall of tattoo ink in New South Wales, it is recommended
that you check the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) provided to you by the
manufacturer or supplier of the ink to confirm that the product is safe to be used in
New South Wales.
For further specific information see the FDA recall — Firm Press Release at:
http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm457347.htm
If clients raise health concerns about the use of the ink, they should be referred to
their General Practitioner.
Should you require any additional information about this letter, please contact your
local Public Health Unit on 1300066055.
Yours sincerely
